Joseff Brodsky. Landscape with a Flood

2010, Russia

Directed by: Sergei Kokovkin
In this 2010 film, Joseph Brodsky is remembered by his friends and fellow
writers. An eminent literary figure both in Russia and abroad, Brodsky’s
poetry echoed with many generations on both sides of the ocean and
continues to fascinate. This film was censored, has been refused air
time in Russia multiple times since its completion, and continues to be
shelved by Russian television. The director opted to refuse all changes
imposed by television channels and show the film in its original version
in the US. The 3rd Annual Russian Documentary Film Festival is proud
to present the world premiere of this film. Sorry, no English
subtitles!

London Philharmonic Orchestra News

Vladimir Jurowski conducted the London
Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert exploring the role of the city of
Constantinople as a pivot point between east and west and including the world
premiere of Matteo d’Amico’s ‘Flight from Byzantium’.

This concert will be available to
listen to online for 2 weeks from 4 October. Visit www.lpo.org.uk/listenagain for
full details.

Reviewed by Erica Jeal in the Guardian (3 stars):

“The focus was on narrator Omar Ebrahim, who read from an essay by Joseph
Brodsky, the four Hilliard singers counterbalancing its world-weariness with
some of Brodsky’s spiritually themed poems, sung in Russian. Ebrahim sat out
front, words dripping from his tongue in a way that made one wish we could
listen to the article without the orchestra buzzing around it.”

Michael Church in the Independent (2 stars):

Facing us on stage was a formidable army: the London Philharmonic and its choir
in full strength, the Hilliard vocal ensemble in the gallery, an oud-player and
a dudukist on a dais, Omar Ebrahim ready to narrate into a microphone, a
surtitle board in the heavens, and Vladimir Jurowski on the podium to whip things
into line.
