Муж попадает в больницу и решает переписать завещание. Тогда Елена предпринимает отчаянные шаги. Гениальность «Елены», впрочем, не в том, что мелодраму о буднях самой обычной тетечки Звягинцев докрутил до состояния хичкоковского триллера. А скорее в финальных выводах, которые превращают этот самый триллер в одно из самых смелых авторских высказываний о сегодняшней России.

Canadian duo Alpha Couple - former gallery owners Kristel Jax and Mark Wolgemuth - craft kaleidoscopic sound collages comprised of textural instrumentation and found soundbites. At once conceptual and emotionally raw, Alpha Couple's compositions are haunting in their ability to communicate ineffable psychic states.
Sky White Tiger is a dreamy rock/electronic act that plays with live projection mapping to create a visual and dense soundscape that is accessible, but decidedly left-of-center. For this one-man appearance by Louis Schwadron (who has toured / performed with The Polyphonic Spree, Rufus Wainwright, Elton John, David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens, and Radiohead), Sky White Tiger is pared down to a piano, a sampler, a projector, and a microphone to yield a raw and electrifying multimedia performance.

An exhibition spatially conceived for and generated through a series of performances by Yve Laris Cohen (b. 1985, San Diego, CA). Hesitation Change, Drag Hesitation, and Cross Hesitation are three styles of a fast waltz, where the dancers suspend movement for a full measure at a time. Working in sculpture, performance and dance, Laris Cohen, rather than literally playing or performing a waltz, instead uses the ? time signature as a template for the architecture and objects with which he interacts.
Yve Laris Cohen's work has been performed and exhibited at locations such as SculptureCenter, Dance Theater Workshop, Abrons Arts Center, Danspace Project, and Movement Research at the Judson Church (all in New York). Laris Cohen is a 2010-2012 Movement Research Artist in Residence, and received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Visual Art Grant Award in 2011. He has two upcoming performances in May 2012, at Danspace Project, NY; and the ICA Philadelphia, PA. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn.

Kammerraku: Chamber Music Meets Japanese Instruments

Two timeless musical traditions will come together in Kammerraku, a program of new chamber music compositions combining the classic string quartet with Japanese instruments to create a stunning new musical experience.
The Voxare String Quartet will be joined by three traditional Japanese music virtuosos for a performance of four new compositions commissioned by Kyo-Shin-An Arts. Kammerraku (literally chamber music: kammer from the German and raku from the Japanese) is a program of Kyo-Shin-An Arts, an organization dedicated to the integration of Japanese instruments into Western classical music.
Showcasing composers and performers from both cultural backgrounds, the evening will feature two world premieres and one New York premiere of works commissioned by Kyo-Shin-An Arts. The lineup includes:
*Koto Concerto: Genji - Written by American composer Daron Hagen, a well-known figure in the opera world, this operatic work for koto and quartet is based on an 11th-century Japanese tale about a man who falls in love with a koto player whose face he's never seen.
*Shakuhachi Quintet (New York Premiere) - Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Paul Moravec wrote this chamber concerto for shakuhachi and quartet. The piece's third movement is based on a six-note melody, C-D-G-A-E-F, spelled out in "Love’s Labour’s Lost," making it the world's first shakuhachi-Shakespeare mashup.
*String Journey (World Premiere) - James Nyoraku Schlefer's musical tale of a samurai who becomes a wandering minstrel is written for shamisen and quartet. Schlefer, an American, is one of only a few non-Japanese artists to have achieved the rank of Grand Master on the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute.
*KyoShin (World Premiere) - Japanese composer Somei Satoh’s ruminative sextet for koto, shakuhachi, and quartet uses repetition and silence to create a calming and compelling soundscape.

An exhibition spatially conceived for and generated through a series of performances by Yve Laris Cohen (b. 1985, San Diego, CA). Hesitation Change, Drag Hesitation, and Cross Hesitation are three styles of a fast waltz, where the dancers suspend movement for a full measure at a time. Working in sculpture, performance and dance, Laris Cohen, rather than literally playing or performing a waltz, instead uses the ? time signature as a template for the architecture and objects with which he interacts.
Yve Laris Cohen's work has been performed and exhibited at locations such as SculptureCenter, Dance Theater Workshop, Abrons Arts Center, Danspace Project, and Movement Research at the Judson Church (all in New York). Laris Cohen is a 2010-2012 Movement Research Artist in Residence, and received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Visual Art Grant Award in 2011. He has two upcoming performances in May 2012, at Danspace Project, NY; and the ICA Philadelphia, PA. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn.

Two timeless musical traditions will come together in Kammerraku, a program of new chamber music compositions combining the classic string quartet with Japanese instruments to create a stunning new musical experience.
The Voxare String Quartet will be joined by three traditional Japanese music virtuosos for a performance of four new compositions commissioned by Kyo-Shin-An Arts. Kammerraku (literally chamber music: kammer from the German and raku from the Japanese) is a program of Kyo-Shin-An Arts, an organization dedicated to the integration of Japanese instruments into Western classical music.
Showcasing composers and performers from both cultural backgrounds, the evening will feature two world premieres and one New York premiere of works commissioned by Kyo-Shin-An Arts. The lineup includes:
*Koto Concerto: Genji - Written by American composer Daron Hagen, a well-known figure in the opera world, this operatic work for koto and quartet is based on an 11th-century Japanese tale about a man who falls in love with a koto player whose face he's never seen.
*Shakuhachi Quintet (New York Premiere) - Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Paul Moravec wrote this chamber concerto for shakuhachi and quartet. The piece's third movement is based on a six-note melody, C-D-G-A-E-F, spelled out in "Love’s Labour’s Lost," making it the world's first shakuhachi-Shakespeare mashup.
*String Journey (World Premiere) - James Nyoraku Schlefer's musical tale of a samurai who becomes a wandering minstrel is written for shamisen and quartet. Schlefer, an American, is one of only a few non-Japanese artists to have achieved the rank of Grand Master on the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute.
*KyoShin (World Premiere) - Japanese composer Somei Satoh’s ruminative sextet for koto, shakuhachi, and quartet uses repetition and silence to create a calming and compelling soundscape.

Книга Александра Чудакова, замечательного
литературоведа, исследователя Чехова, вышла в 2000 году и сразу стала
для многих любимой книгой. И неудивительно — человек с прекрасным
русским языком и прекрасной памятью рассказывал о прекрасных людях, в
которых сохранилась прекрасная дореволюционная Россия. Главный герой
книги, дед рассказчика, богатырь и красавец из семьи потомственных
священников, все умеющий, все знающий, безошибочно различающий добро и
зло, оказался в мире, где утрачены и умения, и знания, и различия между
добром и злом,— но сумел свои ценности передать внуку. И причина успеха
книги была не в обаянии главного героя самом по себе, а именно в том,
что его цельность и красота не были отделены непроходимой пропастью от
рассказчика — а значит, и от читателя. Как рассказчик над могилой деда
восклицал: "Я ненавижу, я люблю то же, что и ты. Ты был прав во всем",—
так и читатель, прочитав книгу, мог сказать себе: "Я — с теми
прекрасными, сильными, чистыми людьми, которые жили в дореволюционной
России, все знали и все умели, а не с теми бессовестными и бесстыжими
убийцами, ворами и лентяями, которые Россию погубили".
Эта легкость отождествления с былым хорошим и
такая же легкость отстранения от нынешнего дурного и сделала книгу
любимым чтением множества людей. Само это "хорошее" при всей своей
неправдоподобной красоте и цельности может быть абсолютно правдиво и
исторически, и биографически, но вот легкость отождествления с ним и
легкость отстранения от текущей реальности — совершенно сказочная. Как
сказки для менее образованной публики — женские романы или романы о
крутых парнях — реализуют мечты своих читателей, так и этот роман, при
всей подлинности и выстраданности вложенного туда авторского опыта и при
всей точности авторской наблюдательности и памяти, реализует мечты
своих читателей — намного более образованных, но так же жаждущих

Лауреатом «Русской премии» за 2012 год стал писатель Юз Алешковский.
«Русская премия», ежегодно вручаемая
«русскоязычным писателям, проживающим в любой стране мира, за пределами
России», существует с 2005 года. До 2007-го ее география
распространялась только на бывший СССР, но затем она расширилась до
пределов всего мира, что, в общем, сильно изменило ее к лучшему. Теперь
среди лауреатов премии стали появляться такие имена, как Наталья
Горбаневская, Дина Рубина, Бахыт Кенжеев, Борис Херсонский, Марина
Палей, а победившая в «крупной прозе» в 2009 году Мариам Петросян с ее
«Домом, в котором...» и вовсе стала чуть ли не главным событием года.
Премия этому не способствовала и не мешала, она просто подтверждала
очевидное: за пределами России живет очень много писателей и поэтов,
пока всех наградишь, никакой премии не хватит. Очевидность вообще как-то
стала казаться главным свойством «Русской премии», тем более что и
регламент располагал: лауреатов шорт-листа на церемонии награждения
просто чинно и предсказуемо рассаживали по местам.

Так
и в этом году одного взгляда на шорт-лист было достаточно, чтобы бегло
выхватить из него вероятных победителей. В поэзии — Алексей Цветков
(книга стихов «Детектор смысла», США). В малой прозе — Мария Рыбакова с
«Гнедичем». И в большой — «Другие барабаны» Лены Элтанг. Это не то чтобы
очевидно лучшие имена, но очевидно самые обсуждаемые. Цветкова — за
статус, Рыбакову — за форму и игры с классикой, Элтанг — за то, что ее
интеллектуальное письмо вполне успешно и популярно далеко не в одной
только среде интеллектуальных читателей (напоминаем, премия НОС за
«Каменные клены» и неплохие тиражи в издательствах-мейджорах).
Так вот самое интересное, что прогноз не
оправдался. Цветков и Рыбакова пришли к финишу вторыми, а Элтанг и вовсе
третьей. Лучшим в номинации «Поэзия» был объявлен харьковский поэт Илья
Риссенберг с первым опубликованным сборником «Третий из двух». Книжка
первая, но имя известное, и сборник уже входил в шорт-лист Андрея
Белого, и Риссенберг с его чуткой внимательностью к языку вполне
вписывается в изначальную премиальную концепцию «сохранения». В малой
прозе победил живущий в Германии Дмитрий Вачедин со сборником рассказов
«Пыль». Вачедин — лауреат (2007 год, рассказ «Стрелок небесной лазури»,
номинация «Молодой русский мир») и лонглистер (2011-й, роман «Снежные
немцы») премии «Дебют» — на самом деле производит впечатление именно
тем, что, хотя поле действия у него неизменно — Германия, главным здесь
становится почти законсервированный в своей классической чистоте русский
язык. Ну а в крупной прозе победил Юз Алешковский с «Маленьким тюремным
романом» о сталинских репрессиях. Роман начинается сном, и во сне же
заканчивается и вся история от Николая Второго и до Сталина, а впрочем, и
наших дней, предстает чем-то вроде запутанной научно-фантастической
дремы. И опять же — чуть ли не важнее сюжета оказывается речь, которая в
романах Алешковского не имеет границ и пределов и течет, почти не
сдерживаясь автором, из потока сознания в неостановимое говорение.
Так что даже немного жалко, что «Русская
премия» вручается без формулировок. Хотя и были бы они, очевидно,
сплошными «за чистоту» да «за сохранение». То есть, говоря по правде, от
лучших книг, написанных писателями, живущими на территории России,
награжденные произведения практически не отличаются. Они с такой же
гордостью игнорируют реальность и так же по-младенчески привязаны к
языку. Это поэтическая экспериментальность прозы — вспомнить опять же
Марию Рыбакову, чей «Гнедич» по большей части становится формальным
опытом сближения стиха и прозы, такого тесного, что граница между ними
оказывается практически неуловима, настолько присуща русской литературе
последних лет, что она и тянет ее на дно. И чем удаленнее от места
возникновения, тем язык выше и чище, а реальность размытее. Так что в
конце остается только чистый звук, отзывающийся в финале романа
Алешковского цитатой из Пушкина, покоем и волей.

В Москве назван лауреат премии «Поэт» за 2012 год. Им стал Евгений Рейн.
Имя нового обладателя премии «Поэт» на
пресс-конференции в Москве назвал писатель Сергей Гандлевский. Церемония
награждения лауреата состоится в Политехническом музее 24 мая.
Евгений Рейн родился в Ленинграде в 1934
году. Писал сценарии, работал геологом, в 1960-е годы вошел в круг так
называемых ахматовских сирот — четырех молодых поэтов, составивших
ближайшее окружение Анны Ахматовой: Рейна, Дмитрия Бобышева, Иосифа
Бродского и Анатолия Наймана. Бродский описывал эту группу так: «Каждый
из нас повторял какую-то роль. Рейн был Пушкиным. Дельвигом, я думаю,
скорее всего, был Бобышев. Найман, с его едким остроумием, был
Вяземским. Я, со своей меланхолией, видимо, играл роль Баратынского». В
начале 1970-х Рейн переехал в Москву, в 1979 году стал одним из
участников альманаха «Метрополь», печатался в самиздате и зарубежной
прессе, с 1984-го стал издаваться и в СССР.
Премия была учреждена в 2005 году Обществом
поощрения русской поэзии и РАО ЕЭС. Ее лауреатом, согласно уставу, может
стать любой ныне живущий русскоязычный поэт. В предыдущие годы премию
вручали: Александру Кушнеру, Олесе Николаевой, Олегу Чухонцеву, Тимуру
Кибирову, Инне Лиснянской и Сергею Гандлевскому. Помимо памятного
диплома и специального нагрудного знака лауреату премии «Поэт» вручается

Tell us about your Juilliard experience.
There was a very small composition department, and they had budgets for recordings, orchestra readings, and projects of all kinds. It was a school for very talented players, and the teachers were very inspiring. It was also living in New York, where at that time—and today for that matter—new music and all kinds of music was happening. The city itself was a highly energized place to be.
Juilliard was basically a trade school then. You went there to learn your trade, and you learned it. You had lots of practice at it, and lots of time to work at it. One very important thing that happened to me was being required to join the chorus for two years. Even though I played an orchestral instrument (flute), they weren’t going to put composers in the orchestra. During those two years with the choir director Abraham Kaplan, we did the Verdi Requiem, Beethoven and Mozart Masses, as well as contemporary music by Dallapiccola and William Schuman. I learned a lot about choruses. When I began writing my first operas, and when I was writing the choral music for Satyagraha [his 1979 opera], I had been out of Juilliard for years, but I used that experience.
Also, the Juilliard String Quartet was a young quartet then [premiering Elliott Carter’s String Quartet No. 2 in 1960]. Can you imagine what that sounded like [in the early ’60s]? People could hardly believe that they could play it! Stockhausen came to give a talk once to the composers at the Composer’s Forum. Martha Graham and José Limón were running programs there, so I began writing music for dance when I was at Juilliard and became a dance composer by the time I was 20. It was a very wide-awake, energized place. I suppose it’s not so different today.
Your work blends classical and popular cultures, now a regular practice in new compositions. What do you imagine is the “next step” in contemporary classical music?
The next step has already happened of course! The next step right now is that young players and composers in their 20s and 30s are assimilating contemporary technology and contemporary aesthetics along with traditional training. Groups like eighth blackbird and Alarm Will Sound draw on global music, popular music, and 20th-century art music. They are anti-ideological and easily cross between popular, global, and art music. They owe no favors to older people at all, so they don’t have to sound like anybody they don’t want to be. So today when someone says, “I’m a composer,” you have no idea what they are writing—not until you listen to it. You don’t have a clue! It can come from any point in 360 degrees, and that is really interesting. The next thing is happening right now. It’s all around us.
What kept you going when you were driving a cab and having a moving company in New York before your career really took off?
I took day jobs, as everyone did. Poets, painters, playwrights, musicians, actors. We all had a day job, and I made sure it was one I could walk away from at any time. I didn’t even try to make a living in the real world. I took totally marginal jobs that freed me to go on tours when I needed to. I never had a job where there was job security because I wanted job insecurity—so that the only thing I was really secure of was that I wanted to write music and that I wanted to play music. That’s what I knew, and how I made a living was not so important. It’s hard to work in that marginal way, but you pick up skills and trades along the way, and at a certain point, with luck, you find that you can make more money staying home writing music than moving furniture.
After being so successful in so many genres—concert music, ballet, opera, film—is there another type of project you see yourself taking on in the near future?
I would say generally we are talking about an area of collaboration that could be with poets, with dancers, with playwrights, with filmmakers, with video people. I think of it as an ongoing process of sharing aesthetic and artistic ideals with people of like mind. And that’s why I’ve gotten into all this stuff. It became a way that stimulated change in my own music and a way that kept me abreast of what other people were doing. It had social, aesthetic, and even economic benefits. I didn’t stay home and just write music by myself. I wrote music and took it to the dance studio or to the film studio. I took it to where my collaborators were. Because it’s so open in that way, I think that not having borders is very important. It was for me.
