Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity

"Fit the century, forget the year."

Valentina Sanina Schlee (1899-1989) – known professionally simply as Valentina — was a fashion pioneer, clothing such luminaries as Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Katharine Cornell, and Mrs. Randolph Hearst and helping to invent American couture in the process. Hers was the quintessential New York success story: she arrived in the city as a young immigrant and reinvented herself as the epitome of style and glamour, becoming a fixture in the fashion pages and a major celebrity in her own right.

Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity is the first exhibition to trace the career of this legendary designer and features never-before-exhibited gowns, accessories, photographs, and printed matter from the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the Valentina family,

and other major collections. Valentina had an unwavering view of personal style and once declared, "I hate fashion!" implying that while trends often bullied women, true style was immutable. She also advised "Fit the century, forget the year." Never before exhibited examples from the designer's personal couture collection and other ephemera will be on view, as well as original silver and platinum photographs of her designs by Cecil Beaton, Horst S. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, John Rawlings and others. Additional highlights of the exhibition are drawn from renowned public and private collections including the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum at FIT, the Brooklyn Museum, and the substantial holdings of the Museum of the City of New York.
A book of the same title, by Kohle Yohannan, is being published concurrently with the exhibition by Rizzoli. Museum of the City of New York · 1220 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY 10029 · 212.534.1672

ARSENAL. Alexandr Dovzhenko
1928-29, 87 minutes, 35mm, silent. No English intertitles; English synopsis available.
One of Dovzhenko's few completely independent films, from script to screen. ARSENAL is a civil war epic envisioned in unusual, painterly images: a fallen soldier - drunk on the enemy's laughing gas - his frozen body still baring its teeth long after the battle and his life are over.

Meet poet Vera Pavlova

You know Vera Pavlova even if you think you don't. If you ride the NYC subway and pay attention to the "Poetry in Motion" posters, you've read her poem. If you read the New Yorker magazine, you surely have noticed Vera's poems on its pages. Only a handful of Russian writers and poets have been thus honored.

Here is one of the four poems that appeared in the New Yorker, the same one shared your rides in the subway:
If there is something to desire,
there will be something to regret.
If there is something to regret,
there will be something to recall.
If there is something to recall,
there was nothing to regret.
If there was nothing to regret,
there was nothing to desire.

Vera Pavlova's poems are short and incisive. One of the former guests of our series, novelist Mikhail Shishkin, once observed that he needs 50 pages to express what Vera manages to pack in 10 lines.
A short documentary about Vera will open the program.

Soviet propaganda cartoons of the 1920-70s

Oleg Sulkin, film critic for the local Russian daily “Novoe Russkoe Slovo," will present a selection of Soviet propaganda animation films released over a sixty year period beginning in the 1920s and ending in the 1970s.
The Russian public is very familiar with some of them (e.g., “Mister Twister”); but many others are not as well-known. Until very recently, these films have not been widely available for American audiences. The shorts, ranging from 3 to
20 minutes long, represent different animation genres and offer a fascinating glimpse into the political, historical and artistic background of the Soviet period.
Oleg Sulkin will offer commentary on the genre of propaganda animation as well as on the peculiarities of the creative process as practiced under the conditions of totalitarian censorship.

All films will be presented in Russian with English subtitles.
