Little Tragedies. Alexandr Pushkin
Tuesday, November 03, 2009 through Saturday, November 14, 2009 www.littletragedies.org tickets only $18 In English verse of four short plays by Russia's most beloved writer. | |
Alexandr Pushkin's LITTLE TRAGEDIES consists of four short verse plays about human nature's inherent contradictions. "The Knight-Miser," the richest man in the world discovers that money can't buy him love or the respect of his son. "Mozart and Salieri" is the story of the greatest genius--and the greatest villain--in the history of music. The Stone Guest features the swashbuckling lover-poet Don Juan in a love triangle with his fiery mistress Laura (the actual prototype for Carmen) and Doña Anna, the true love of his life, (with far more action in a few minutes than in all of Chekhov's plays combined). And in "The Feast in Time of Plague," revelers honor a fallen friend with poems and songs, in search of answers to the question: what do we do, when there's nothing we can do?

Lyudmila Stefanovna Petrushevskaya (Russian: Людмила Стефановна Петрушевская) (born May 26, 1938) is a Russian writer, novelist and playwright. Petrushevskaya is regarded as one of Russia's most talented contemporary writers, whose writing combine postmodernist trends with the psychological insights and parodic touches of writers such as Anton Chekhov.
Over the last few decades, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya has been one of the most admired and acclaimed contemporary writers at work in Eastern Europe: The Times has called her "one of the finest living Russian writers".[citation needed]
In 1979, she was co-writer of the scenario for one of the most influential Russian animated films, Tale of Tales. She served as a jury member in the 3rd Open Russian Festival of Animated Film in 1998.
Her works include the novels The Time Night (1992) and The Number One, both short-listed for the Russian Booker Prize, and Immortal Love, a collection of short stories and monologues. Since the late 1980s her plays, stories and novels have been published in more than 30 languages all over the world. In 2003 she was awarded the Pushkin Prize in Russian literature by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in Germany. She was awarded The Russian State Prize for arts (2004), The Stanislavsky Award (2005), and The Triumph Prize (2006).
Lyudmila Petrushevskaya lives in Moscow, where she continues her work.
In a 1993 interview with Sally Laird, translator of her novella, "The Time Night," Petrushevskaya said of her own work, "Russia is a land of women Homers, women who tell their stories orally, just like that, without inventing anything. They're extraordinarily talented storytellers. I'm just a listener among them."[citation needed][1]
Penguin has announced a new book, "There Once Lived a Woman who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby," by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya to be published in the U.S. in October 2009.

On October 15, Neue Galerie New York will open “From Klimt to Klee: Masterworks from the Serge Sabarsky Collection.” With this exhibition, the museum honors the life and work of its co-founder, Serge Sabarsky. A tireless advocate for German and Austrian art, Sabarsky was the driving force behind the creation of the museum. He was also a dedicated collector, who acquired numerous masterworks by the artists he cherished. The exhibition demonstrates the range and quality of the Sabarsky Collection, with its holdings in works by Austrian artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka, and German artists Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, among many others. It runs through February 15, 2010.
“The Neue Galerie exists today because of the vision and drive of two men: Ronald Lauder and Serge Sabarsky,” said Renée Price, Director of the Neue Galerie. “With this exhibition of selections from the Sabarsky collection, we pay homage to Serge and to his legacy.”
“Nothing in the world had a greater influence on me than my Sunday afternoons with Serge,” said Ronald Lauder, President and Co-founder of the Neue Galerie. “The most important lessons I learned about art came from these discussions with him; I learned to look carefully, to immerse myself, and to follow my passion. These lessons have guided me through the years.”
Serge Sabarsky (1912-1996) had a colorful life. Born in Vienna, he worked as a clown and set designer for Simplicissimus, the leading cabaret of the era. He fled his native city in 1938 and settled in New York, where he worked successfully as a contractor before establishing a gallery for Austrian and German Expressionist art. In his later years, he left the commercial art world in order to organize touring museum exhibitions of his collection. With his friend Ronald S. Lauder, he established the Neue Galerie. Although Sabarsky died in 1996, before the museum came to fruition, his passion, expertise, and generosity have informed every aspect of the institution. Since opening in 2001, the Neue Galerie has enjoyed tremendous success, drawing worldwide interest and realizing Sabarsky’s dream: a permanent home in the United States for German and Austrian art and design of the early twentieth century .

Giant "Space Suit" Sculptures to House Fashion Show Inspired by Science-Fiction Style Elements of the Former Soviet Bloc
| Installation: November 4 - 22, opening November 4 from 6-8 pm Performances: Nov 6 at 6 + 8 pm, Nov 14 at 8 pm, and Nov 21 at 6 + 8 pm at chashama 679. 679 Third Avenue at East 43rd Street. |
For Performa 09, Polish artist Christian Tomaszewski, in collaboration with video and performance artist Joanna Malinowska, considers how the future was imagined by the Communist regimes of the former Soviet Bloc. Mother Earth Sister Moon explores this theme by examining the fashion and style elements related to a diverse range of Eastern Bloc phenomena, including the Soviet space program, sci-fi film and literature of the era, and the cults surrounding the mysterious 1908 explosion over the Tunguska River Valley in central Siberia. This research will manifest itself as a giant reconstruction of the suit worn by the first woman in space—Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova—that also pays tribute to the sculpture Hon-en Katedral (“She-a Cathedral”), an enormous female figure conceived and built by Niki de Saint Phalle with Jean Tinguely in 1966. Visitors to the sculpture will be able to walk inside it and—at designated “performance” times—view a fashion show, with music by Masami Tomihisa, featuring both reconstructions of actual garments and new designs that evoke the Soviet space program and science-fiction films. In this way, the live show will act as a curated design exhibition in motion.
